KUCHING: After four years of planning, the Sungai Maong Voluntary Patrol Scheme (SRS) Post has finally been officially opened, symbolising the residents’ commitment to maintaining the safety and peace of their area.

The launch of the post marks the proactive collective effort of the community, which does not merely rely on the authorities.

Programme organising chairman Yiew Leong Yee said the post is more than just a physical structure.

“It is a manifestation of the community’s determination to ensure that this area remains safe and peaceful.

“With support from the Batu Lintang assemblyman and local residents, we are finally seeing this dream become a reality,” he said during the launch here last night.

Meanwhile, Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How said that safety is a shared responsibility.

“Every individual has a role to play in safeguarding their neighbourhood.

“This is because the peace and harmony of our area is not solely the duty of the authorities, but the result of active community cooperation.”

Sungai Maong SRS president Desmond Ong Eng Gin said their team now consists of 30 active members who conduct weekly patrols around the area.

“We also have a community chat group on WhatsApp involving about 400 residents.

“This group allows safety information to be shared quickly, complaints to be handled promptly and SRS is even authorised to conduct roadblocks when necessary,” he shared.
