SIBU: A team from the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong Branch took time out to check on living conditions at two rural longhouses here recently.

The visit to Rumah Steve Chaong and Rumah Pop Chendang demonstrated their concern for rural housing.

“The visit also reflected the commitment of the Sarawak government to improving the living conditions of longhouse residents,” said branch chairman, Wong Ching Yong, who led the team.

At Rumah Steve, Wong and his team members, including SUPP Sibu Jaya branch chairman, Kapitan Kong Sing Ping, and Councillor Jason Tay assisted residents in applying for a loan from the Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to support the construction of a new longhouse.

According to Wong, who is also Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) Deputy Chairman, the application involved 20 doors, with the aim of providing a safer and more modern longhouse environment.

Later they proceeded to Rumah Pop’s construction site to inspect the progress of the project.

Wong said the longhouse had secured a HDC loan with the assistance of his branch, and that construction work was underway.

“The residents hoped the new longhouse construction would be completed soon to improve the quality of life in their community,” he added.
