KUCHING: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) introduced two new honours at its 2025 Delegates Conference on Sunday, recognising veteran members for their lifelong dedication.
Deputy Premier and SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian presented the awards at the party’s headquarters.
The Sa’ati Lifetime Loyalty and Dedication Award was posthumously conferred on the late former Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Wong Soon Kai.
The award was received by his 99-year-old wife, Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Dr Jane Yong Sau Kan, who joined SUPP in 1978 and supported her husband’s political work throughout his career.
Yong played a crucial role in 2017 as a key witness when SUPP reclaimed three shop lots in Sibu.
Despite her poor health at the time, her testimony helped secure the party’s successful claim.
She has never sought recognition, describing her actions as fulfilling her duty as a party member and spouse.
The Sa’ati Lifetime Loyalty Award was presented to veteran Voon Siak Fah, 91, who joined SUPP through the Siniawan Branch on August 27, 1959, just 85 days after the party’s founding.
This year marks 66 years of his membership.
His wife, Lee Moi Lan, joined in 1961.
Before Sarawak joined Malaysia in 1963, Voon participated in anti-colonial and anti-Malaysia Federation movements.
He and his wife were detained as political detainees during politically turbulent years.
Released in 1980, he resumed service with SUPP, demonstrating decades-long commitment to the party’s growth and activities.
During the branch’s temporary freeze, he carefully preserved the Siniawan sub-branch plaque at his home.
To Voon, preserving the plaque meant preserving the party’s life, ensuring the spirit of service continues unbroken across generations.
On August 20, 2025, he handed the plaque back to the Siniawan branch with tears in his eyes, a heartfelt gesture reflecting his loyalty and relief that the party’s spirit would continue.
The awardees were met with applause from party leaders and delegates at the Unity Hall when they walked in to receive their awards.
Yong remains active and highly respected among members, while Voon is celebrated for his decades-long dedication to SUPP, having never sought recognition or awards, just like Yong.
