SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan inspected roads around SMK Chung Cheng yesterday to address widening works and utility pole relocation affecting safety of students, teachers and nearby residents.
Branch chairman Kevin Lau Kor Jie led the inspection together with members of the school’s board of directors and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) engineer Louis Song Tung Seng.
Lau said the proposed works require coordination among relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation and minimal disruption to the surrounding community.
He stressed that all parties must participate in discussions and reach consensus through proper communication to achieve a win-win outcome.
Lau added that, in his capacity as a Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) councillor, he would assist the school in handling the necessary application procedures to facilitate the project.
On power infrastructure, Song noted that the school’s electricity demand has increased over the years, including greater use of air-conditioning and electrical appliances, raising concerns over the system’s load capacity.
He said SEB is working with the team to carry out an on-site assessment to better understand existing conditions and evaluate the feasibility of adjusting power lines and related infrastructure to ensure a stable and safe electricity supply in future.
Lau, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chairman, said the relocation of utility poles may involve the use of privately owned land.
“Discussions have been held on the matter, with preliminary consent obtained from local residents and landowners.
“I hope that through continued consultation and collaboration, resources and public input can be effectively integrated to improve local infrastructure and create a safer and more convenient environment for residents, students and school staff,” he said.
