SIBU: Families in the Lebaan area at West Bank here received an early Mid-Autumn Festival cheer when the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch mobile team visited 10 households on Sunday (Sept 13).
Led by branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, the team presented mooncakes to residents while taking the opportunity to hear about their concerns, daily challenges and practical needs.
More than a festive gesture, the visits reflected the team’s emphasis on staying connected with residents at the grassroots level, particularly during traditional festivals when family, community and togetherness take on special significance.
Lau said house-to-house engagement allowed the team to communicate directly with residents, understand their circumstances and, where necessary, follow up on issues requiring assistance.
During the outreach, the team also stopped along Jalan Yew Chai Toh to meet a resident who had previously raised concerns about the condition of the road in front of his home.
The visit took an especially meaningful turn at one household when the family shared a collection of old photographs dating back to 1996.
The photographs captured community leaders who had played important roles in the development of Chinese education in Sibu at the time, including the late father of the resident visited by the team.
For Lau, the photographs offered a timely reminder that the progress enjoyed by the community today was built over decades through the commitment and sacrifices of earlier generations.
He said the same spirit of collective responsibility remained important in ensuring the continued development of Chinese education, which required not only the dedication of principals and teachers but also the support and participation of the wider community.
“I hope the Mid-Autumn Festival would serve as more than a traditional occasion for families to gather and enjoy mooncakes, but also as a time to remember the people and generations who had contributed to the community’s development.
“By preserving that spirit of gratitude and caring for one another, the community could continue working together to create a brighter future for the younger generation,” added Lau, who is also SUPP Youth Chief.
