KUCHING: The Kuching branch of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will hold a special evening service counter aimed at assisting students to apply for the RM1,200 Special Financial Assistance on Thursday (May 8) from 6 pm-9 pm.
The service counter, which demonstrates the party’s ongoing commitment to grassroots engagement and youth welfare, will be held at Life Cafe.
Kuching SUPP Youth chief Nicholas Wung said the initiative reflects the party’s focus on meeting people where they are, particularly students and working families who often struggle to access public services during office hours.
“We want to make public services more accessible and approachable.
“This evening counter is part of our continued effort to connect with the community and ensure that support systems truly reach those in need,” he said this in a statement.
He added that the service counter will serve as a one-stop station for students seeking to apply for the allowance, as well as residents requiring help with legal matters, social welfare applications, and government document registration.
“Applications for the RM1,200 financial aid — introduced to help ease the burden on Sarawakian students — opened on May 1 and will close on June 1.
“Successful applicants will receive RM600 in the first disbursement. A second application window is scheduled for September,” he said.
Wung explained that SUPP volunteers will assist students in compiling softcopies of necessary documents such as ICs, university offer letters, and Sarawak IDs.
“Income verification support will also be available on-site, including a Kapitan’s endorsement for parents who are self-employed or unemployed,” he said.
The evening event will also feature free legal consultations, with Wung offering direct legal advice to attendees in his capacity as a practising lawyer.
“In addition, other community services available on-site include registration for the Kenyalang Gold Card, OKU (persons with disabilities) registration, and welfare-related documentation support.
“This effort is not just about paperwork. It’s about meeting real needs in a way that’s timely and accessible.
“We urge students and residents to attend and take full advantage of the services,” he added.
