KUCHING: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has issued a stern warning to the people of Sarawak against what it described as the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) latest attempt to “hoodwink voters with political illusions,” saying the opposition party is once again “dangling its imaginary magic carrots” to mislead the public.
SUPP Stakan Branch, in a statement, said it views DAP’s recent resolution, calling for Bumiputera status to be granted to all third-generation Sarawak Chinese, as “a cynical and calculated manipulation of the hopes and dreams of our community”.
“DAP is once again attempting to hoodwink our electorate, treating voters as little more than donkeys chasing their imaginary ‘magic carrots’.
“This is not a genuine proposal but a deliberate act of political opportunism designed to create false hope among the Chinese community,” the statement said.
Furthermore, SUPP Stakan accused DAP of reviving the same pattern of “broken pledges and false promises” that had failed Sarawakians before.
“Sarawakians remember all too well the last round of grand promises, the pledge to return 50 per cent of all monies collected in Sarawak and the boast of a 20 per cent oil royalty without the need to beg.
“These were not just failed promises. They were exaggerated tools of political warfare,” it said.
SUPP argued that DAP’s latest proposal is “hollow at its core” and impossible to implement within Malaysia’s constitutional and political framework.
“They are fully aware of the insurmountable constitutional and political realities.
“Article 153 of the Federal Constitution safeguards the special position of Malays and the natives of Sabah and Sarawak. This cannot simply be brushed aside to suit a political narrative,” SUPP said.
The statement further noted that as a national party, DAP must cooperate with Bumiputera-based parties to form a government, and no such party would ever agree to redefine the Bumiputera status.
“In Sarawak, DAP knows it can never achieve a mandate to rule on its own.
“This latest move is nothing more than a desperate, last-ditch attempt to cling to relevance by offering a prize they cannot possibly deliver.”
Calling it a “desperate act carried out in the name of political survival,” SUPP Stakan urged Sarawakians to remain vigilant and united against political deceit.
“We must not allow the aspirations of the Chinese community to be used as fodder for DAP’s electoral machine.
“It is up to all of us in Sarawak to expose this deceit and finally shut down their cycle of false hope once and for all,” the statement said.
