SRI AMAN: Police have arrested the suspect involved in a murder case at Golden Fame Plantation, Pantu, less than 24 hours after the incident.
Sri Aman District Police Chief, Supt Dennis Bunyam, said the suspect, identified as Bakri Zaini, 35, an Indonesian national, was apprehended following a public tip-off and swift action by the investigation team.
He said the arrest was made during a special operation carried out by personnel from the Sri Aman District Police Headquarters (IPD) and the D9 unit of the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ IPK) around 12.00 pm yesterday (Thursday, April 17), in an open area near the workers’ quarters.
“The police extend their utmost appreciation to members of the public who provided information which led to the suspect’s arrest within 24 hours of the incident,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The suspect is currently being held under Sections 302 and 435 of the Penal Code to assist with further investigation.
Dennis also reminded the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could disrupt the investigation, and urged continued cooperation to ensure public safety and order.
The incident occurred on April 16, when a 35-year-old Indonesian plantation worker was believed to have been hacked to death with a machete by a fellow worker during a fight at the oil palm plantation.
The victim was found lying motionless with wounds to the neck, right arm, right hand, right thigh and soles of the feet, believed to have been inflicted by a sharp weapon, suspected to be a machete.
Before fleeing, the suspect allegedly set fire to the workers’ quarters, destroying 12 housing units.
