KUCHING: A high-speed car chase that gripped motorists from Jalan Kuching-Serian to Jalan Penrissen on Saturday (Jan 31) ended with the arrest of a local man believed to be behind multiple crimes in the city.
The pursuit occurred when police detected the 35-year-old suspect on the road while tracking him for his alleged involvement in a house break-in along Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho that was reported a day earlier, and several motorcycle theft cases around Kuching.
At the time, he was driving a white Perodua Viva from Jalan Kuching-Serian towards the city.
When instructed to stop, the suspect allegedly refused to cooperate and attempted to escape, triggering a dangerous chase towards Taman Berjaya area, 4 1/2 Mile.
Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the suspect rammed several vehicles on the Jalan Penrissen flyover, creating a chaotic and risky situation for other road users.
“A police officer sustained multiple injuries to his body while attempting to stop the suspect amid the pursuit.
“The chase came to an end when the suspect rear-ended a car and a special operations team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) managed to overpower him,” he said.
The incident had since gone viral after multiple dashcam footages of the pursuit at Jalan Penrissen flyover was uploaded on social media.
Alexson stated that initial urine screening showed the suspect tested positive for drugs, while background checks revealed that he has 20 prior criminal records.
The case is being investigated under Section 457 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for housebreaking with intent to commit theft and obstructing a civil servant in the discharge of duty.
Members of the public with additional information related to the incident are urged to report them to investigating officer Sgt Frankie at 019-846 2132 or any of the nearest police station.
