KUCHING: A man who was previously remanded in Sri Aman to assist investigations into an arson case there has been remanded for another three days in Kuching in connection with a similar incident involving a convenience store at Green Road, Sin Sin Park.
Senior Assistant Registrar Nuraini Ahmad has allowed a police application to extend the remand of the 36-year-old suspect for three more days to assist investigations under Section 436 of the Penal Code.
The suspect was previously remanded in Sri Aman in connection with an arson case in the district before being brought to Kuching on Sept 26 to assist investigations into the Green Road incident.
Over the weekend, the suspect was also brought before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan, who granted a one-day remand order in connection with the case.
Following the expiry of the one-day remand, police applied for a further extension today, which was granted by Nuraini for another three days.
The suspect is being investigated over an incident in which a convenience store at Green Road, Sin Sin Park, was allegedly set on fire at about 8.30pm on Sept 20.
Meanwhile, one of two other suspects previously remanded in connection with the Green Road incident, a 40-year-old man, was released from remand over the weekend.
The other suspect, a 23-year-old man whose remand period ended today, was also released from remand by Magistrate Nureina Syafika Mohd Najib.
However, he was subsequently rearrested today to assist investigations into another arson case in Saratok.
The 40-year-old suspect was arrested at a premises in Sibu at about 2.40pm on Sept 22, while the 23-year-old suspect was arrested at a cafe along Jalan Nanas, Sarikei, at about 9.30pm the same day.
The Green Road incident was one of two arson cases reported in Kuching and Sri Aman on Sept 20, involving premises belonging to the same convenience store chain.
At the time of this writing, three men have been detained to assist investigations into the two incidents, with arrests made in Sri Aman and Kuching.
The investigation is being conducted by Inspector Tan Chiang Fook while all three suspects are represented by counsel Daniel Ling.
