MIRI: A 35-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol was arrested during a late-night police operation in Miri that also resulted in 45 traffic summonses being issued.
The operation, known as Op Mabuk, was carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri) along Jalan Miri-Airport between 11pm on Saturday and 2.30am on Sunday.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said officers inspected 140 individuals and 127 vehicles during the operation, which targeted drink driving and other traffic offences.
Among those screened was a local man whose breath test indicated the presence of alcohol in his system while driving. He was subsequently detained and taken to the Miri Traffic Police Station for further investigation.
A blood sample was later obtained at Miri Hospital’s Forensic Department to determine the alcohol content in his bloodstream.
Police also detected a range of traffic violations, including driving without a valid licence, illegal exhaust modifications, expired road tax and failure to display provisional licence plates.
ACP Mohd Farhan said motorists convicted of drink driving face penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment, fines ranging from RM10,000 to RM30,000 and possible disqualification from holding a driving licence for two years.
He stressed that police would continue to take firm action against motorists who drive or ride under the influence of alcohol, warning that such behaviour endangers both road users and the wider public.
The public has also been urged to report illegal street racing and traffic offences to the police to support efforts to improve road safety.
