ROBAN: An elderly couple escaped unharmed after their two-storey wooden house in Kampung Lichok was destroyed in a fire yesterday (Sept 28).
The incident occurred at around 5.45 pm when the couple, aged 73 and 74, heard a loud thunderclap followed by the sound of shattering lights before flames spread to the upper floor of their house.
They managed to evacuate to safety in time.
Firefighters from Sarikei station were dispatched to the scene, about 35km away, to extinguish the blaze after receiving an emergency call.
Saratok police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said initial findings indicated that the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit.
“The house was completely destroyed, while the total loss is still being assessed.
“No temporary relief centre (PPS) was opened, and the case does not involve any element of foul play or crime,” he said.
It is learned that the couple, who resided at Rumah Panjang Umpit, Brayang Sungai 3, Seblak, Roban, were the only occupants at the time.
