KUCHING: The Sarawak Hornbills soared to a historic victory at the Malaysia Ultimate Open 2025, clinching the Juara Division title after defeating contenders Chuckies in a thrilling final.
The win marked a milestone not only for the team but also for Malaysian Ultimate as a whole, with the Hornbills becoming the first Malaysian team in over a decade of the tournament’s history to both reach the finals and lift the trophy.
“Winning is always great — it’s second nature to us.
But this medal meant more. After more than a decade of trying, to finally make it to the finals and win it… that was the cherry on top,” said Sarawak Flying Disc Association President Eric Ting Tiew Yui.
Reflecting on the team’s performance during the two-day tournament on June 14 and 15 at the Equestrian Park in Putrajaya, Eric said the key was simple: to play their game and not lose to themselves.
While the team had high hopes entering the tournament, Eric admitted that nothing was guaranteed once they reached the knockout stages.
“We were definitely aiming for a deep run, but once you’re in the top four, anything can happen,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted recently.
Their success was built on consistency and commitment. The Sarawak Hornbills train diligently every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday after work, occasionally adding Sunday sessions to stay sharp.
“There are no shortcuts to success,” Eric emphasised.
Despite the win, the road to the top was far from easy. The team faced financial and logistical challenges, with limited support and subpar training facilities.
“Frisbee is an expensive sport. We wish our government supported us more.
If we had better funding, we’d have access to better-maintained fields and reduce the risk of injuries,” Eric shared.
The Sarawak Hornbills’ victory is a major boost for the sport in the region and a proud moment for the Sarawak Flying Disc Association, signalling the growing strength of Ultimate in East Malaysia.
