KUCHING: The newly launched SWG Green Complex and Decarbon Hub marks a significant milestone in Sarawak’s transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon industrial future in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, says SWG Energy Group chairman Datuk Seri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg.

He said the facility is more than just an infrastructure development, describing it as a strategic platform for SWG Energy Group to contribute meaningfully to Sarawak’s green energy agenda.

“Today marks a significant establishment of the SWG Green Complex and Decarbon Hub. It reflects our commitment to support Sarawak in the transition towards a more sustainable and low-carbon industrial future in line with the aspirations of the PCDS,” he said in his welcoming address at the launch held here today.

Abang Karim said the complex would support three key practical focus areas, beginning with the development of green-certified industrial facilities designed in compliance with Green Building Index standards.

“First, we are developing green-certified industrial facilities with project design assessments approved by the Green Building Index Committee.

“Second, through the SWG S2 launch, we are advancing hydrogen-related applications, including hydrogen-enriched water, as part of our broader effort to explore practical uses of hydrogen.

“Third, through the Department of Tech at SWG, we are undertaking pilot initiatives including methanol-based applications for commercial diesel energy,” he said.

He stressed that while each initiative may appear small individually, together they form an integrated effort to support Sarawak’s transition towards a technology-driven, low-carbon economy.

He also highlighted SWG’s long-term ambition to explore emerging green industrial opportunities, including green steel and low-carbon methanol-based products, noting that these remain at exploratory stages but reflect the group’s commitment to sustainability.

“We firmly believe that sustainable development requires close collaboration between the government and the private sector,” he said, adding appreciation for the state’s supportive policies that have encouraged investment, innovation and industrial transformation.

Meanwhile, at the same event, SWG Energy Group and i-CATS University College signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) covering joint research and innovation, industrial training, curriculum development, internships and consultancy services.

The collaboration aims to strengthen graduate employability and develop a highly skilled workforce to support Sarawak’s growing petrochemical and energy ecosystem, in line with the PCDS 2030 agenda.

In addition, a strategic partnership involving Tianjin University, Guangdong Gulf Power Resources and SWG Energy Group was also established to advance research in alternative fuel technologies, technology transfer, talent development and academic exchange.

The partnership is expected to enhance Malaysia–China collaboration in low-carbon energy technologies while accelerating industrial growth, improving emissions performance and developing local technical expertise in support of regional decarbonisation efforts.
