MIRI: Swift action by on-duty medical personnel and police officers at the SUKMA silat venue in the Indoor Stadium here on Thursday saved a young female athlete from Johor who attempted to harm herself with a knife.

The incident occurred at 5.26 pm when the athlete, who had competed earlier in one of the silat events, was seen running into a café located outside the stadium.

She then rushed into the kitchen and grabbed a knife.

Fortunately, the café staff quickly noticed something was amiss and alerted the authorities.

The athlete was promptly subdued by the medical personnel and police, preventing a potential tragedy.

She is currently being attended to in a medical room inside the Miri Indoor Stadium.

Authorities are looking into the circumstances leading to the incident as they continue to provide care and support for the young athlete.
