KUCHING: Sarawak’s rising star, Chereen Ngo, made an impressive mark at the 51st Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championship (SAGSC), held from Feb 7 to 9, with strong support from her father, Ngo Sie Haw.
In the 800m freestyle and 400m individual medley events, Chereen had set new meet records in Group 2 (14 to 15 years).
Despite these remarkable achievements, she expressed mild disappointment for not surpassing her personal best.
“I feel somewhat disappointed as I did not meet my own expectations, but I was still grateful for the unwavering support from my club,” she told Sarawak Tribune at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre on Sunday (Feb 9).
With 10 gold medals to her belt and the Best Girl Award for Group 4, the swim-queen remains committed to relentless training, determined to achieve even greater success.
When asked about her future plans, she simply stated that she would continue training diligently.
Chereen draws inspiration from distance events, particularly the 800m freestyle, with her role model being national swimmer Mohd Dhuha Zulfikry. “He is someone I admire for his dedication and skill,” she said.
Her daily training sessions, often lasting several hours, reflect her unwavering determination to succeed.
Chereen’s father, Ngo Sie Haw, praised her commitment. “I felt incredibly proud of her achievements at the SAGSC.
“She has qualified for the 60th Malaysia Invitational Age Group (MIAG) in two weeks. We consistently encourage her, and when she does not perform as expected, we have discussions, but we always motivate her to strive for more.”
The family, based in Pending, has a strong swimming tradition, though her brother competes in water polo.
“Next week, her brother will represent Sarawak in Seremban,” her father added proudly.
Despite the challenges, Chereen remains determined, with a promising future ahead.
“We always tell her she can achieve even more, especially with more competitions on the horizon this year,” her father said.
Currently a student at Chung Hwa Middle School No. 1, Chereen meticulously balances her academic commitments with her demanding training schedule.
With her passion and drive, the future looks exceptionally bright for this talented swimmer.
Chereen represented Kota Samarahan Swimming Association under Power Aquatics Swimming Club for the 51st SAGSC.
