KUCHING: The SwinTalk series titled “AI in Enhancing Industry Competitiveness and Sustainability” is dedicated to engaging thought leaders, industry experts and academia in meaningful discussions on emerging trends and innovations, especially on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, the event was a significant step for Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak campus in contributing to support Sarawak’s digital economy, in conjunction with the launching of two new courses – Bachelor of Data Science and Bachelor of Cyber Security.
Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Professor Lou Hieng Ho said the event is not only an insightful discussion on AI’s transformative potential but also a milestone in Swinburne’s journey as a leading digital institution.
“We are committed to bridging academic and industry, ensuring that the graduates are not only well-versed in theory, but also equipped with practical and real-world expertise,” he during the launching of the two new courses here on Wednesday (March 19).
“These courses are customised to meet the industry need, address talent gaps and prepare graduates to drive innovation in AI, data analytics as well as cybersecurity,” he said.
Lou also said that digital transformation in businesses, governments and entire industries is being reshaped by AI, data- driven decision-making and the urgent need for cybersecurity resilience.
He urged all to be at the forefront in these fields as skilled professionals are increasingly requested in these fields and that Swinburne Sarawak is determined to be the forefront of talent development in these areas.
In the meantime, Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) deputy president Datuk Dr Philip Ting said everyone is living an era where data is the new currency, and AI the engine that is powering its potential.
“AI is now revolutionising how businesses analyse data, automate process and enhance decision-making.
“However, as AI adoption increases, so do concerns around data security as well as ethical considerations and cyber threats,” he said.
Ting stated that it is crucial to not only shape a workforce that has a good understanding of AI but also good safeguards for the integrity of a digital future.
“These discussions will provide valuable insights into how AI is transforming and how Sarawak can capitalise on these advancements to remain competitive and sustainable,” he said.
Ting urged everyone to actively participate in the discussion as AI, data science and cybersecurity are not just a trend, but also the foundation of the digital future.
