KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus has launched its Flagship STEM Outreach Program 2025, bringing together more than 220 students from 13 secondary schools across Sarawak in a groundbreaking initiative to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The launch event was held at Swinburne Sarawak and graced by the Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

It featured two major activities: the Swinburne Big Day Out and the Future ICT Coders Workshop and Competition.

“Programmes like the Future ICT Coders Workshop not only equip students with future-ready skills such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cybersecurity, but also strengthen collaboration between schools, teachers, universities, and industry,” he said.

Sagah lauded Swinburne Sarawak’s commitment to nurturing young STEM talent in his opening remarks.

Sagah also emphasised the importance of the initiative in supporting the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, highlighting key government efforts such as the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), the STEM Catalyst and STEM Trailblazers programmes, and the ‘No Kids Left Behind’ initiative.

One of the key highlights, the Future ICT Coders Workshop, challenged students with team-based coding tasks and digital solution projects under the guidance of Swinburne Sarawak’s expert lecturers.

Meanwhile, the Swinburne Big Day Out, themed ‘Carbon Warriors: Tackling Climate Change Together’, promoted environmental awareness through hands-on STEM workshops focused on carbon capture technologies and their real-world applications.

Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Swinburne Sarawak, Ir Professor Sim Kwan Yong, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to shaping a digitally competent generation.

“Our Flagship STEM Outreach Programme reflects Swinburne Sarawak’s strong commitment to empowering the next generation with the knowledge, skills and creativity needed for a digital future,” he said.

The success of this year’s programme was made possible through partnerships with key organisations, including Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Tecforte, and professional bodies such as IEM, IChemE, IET and IEEE Sarawak Subsection, as well as the educational platform Rakan Tutor.
