KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is expecting continued growth with the Sarawak government’s Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) making education even more accessible for all Sarawakians.

Its chairman Datuk Amar Jaul Samion said the university has continued to grow over the years, with its student numbers having increased from the hundreds to around 4,500 today, including international students from over 50 countries.

“We are absolutely delighted by this far-sighted and strategic decision of the Premier and Sarawak government.

“We are truly excited to welcome more bright young Sarawakians to our campus — the future changemakers who will learn, grow, and make a difference here in Sarawak and beyond,” he said in his speech during the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Tuesday (Oct 28).

Jaul added that Swinburne Sarawak has played a key role in supporting Sarawak’s aspirations towards becoming a developed, high-income and technology-driven state by producing future-ready graduates, advancing impactful research, and strengthening industry collaborations.

“Today, our graduates can be found across every sector of Sarawak’s economy — from energy and engineering to creative industries, digital technology, and entrepreneurship, among others.

“Many have gone on to lead organisations, establish successful start-ups, and contribute to shaping policies and innovations.

“We, therefore, take great pride in being a part of this journey — nurturing the next generation of Sarawakians who, no doubt, will contribute positively to the state’s social and economic transformation,” he said.

Looking forward, Jaul expressed commitment that Swinburne Sarawak will stay ahead of the curve by embracing innovation, expanding research capabilities, and deepening its engagement with industry and partners.

“We will continue to invest in state-of-the-art facilities, strengthen our academic excellence, and ensure our graduates are equipped with the skills, mindset, and adaptability to thrive in the digital and sustainable economy of the future.

“As we reflect on 25 years of achievement, let us remember that this milestone is not just about how far we’ve come but also about where we are heading.

“Looking ahead, I am confident that with the continued support of Swinburne Australia, the Sarawak government, our partners, and communities, the next 25 years will be even more impactful and inspiring,” he said.
