KUCHING: Graduates of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak have been urged to take a leading role in shaping a new society in Sarawak that leverages technological advancements for the collective good.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Chief Academic Officer of Swinburne University of Technology, Professor Simon Ridings, said graduates are now uniquely positioned to help usher in a more innovative and competitive era for the state.

“A new journey now awaits you. Your Swinburne qualification is a ticket to an exciting future,” he said during the university’s convocation ceremony held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday,” he added.

“You now have the opportunity to help lead Sarawak towards a new society where the benefits of the technological era are fully harnessed and unleashed to address the challenges we face.”

Ridings encouraged graduates to continue thinking critically, acting as agents of change, and applying the knowledge and skills they have acquired to build a better future – not only for themselves, but also for their communities and the nation.

He also noted the rapid global transformation driven by technological advancements, artificial intelligence, demographic shifts, and issues related to climate and geopolitics.

“In this context, you are crucial assets in determining the future direction through creative and responsible approaches,” he said.

“We are facing some of the greatest challenges of our time.

“While there is no magic wand to create a better world, all of us must use the resources, skills and abilities we possess to help make a better future for our communities, society and the world a reality.”
