KUCHING: The launch of two new courses, namely Bachelor of Data Science and Bachelor of Cyber Security, by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus marks an important milestone for the university.

The introduction of these courses aligns with the state’s aspirations for digitalisation and cybersecurity.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the courses reflect Sarawak痴 commitment to safeguarding its data and cybersecurity.

“Ten years ago, people would have questioned the necessity of these courses, but today, the demand is clear,” he said.

“At the same time, we need to establish Sarawak’s own cybersecurity framework, and to achieve that, we require a strong talent pool.

“As we move toward digitalisation, expertise in these areas is essential, particularly data scientists, and there’s no better place to start than at home.”

Dr Sim said this when met by reporters after the launch of the two courses alongside the SwinTalk series here on Wednesday (March 19).

He added that the two new courses are part of Sarawak’s nation building, reiterating that there is no reason why Sarawak cannot cultivate its own cyber security and data science experts, as these fields coincide with the state’s aspiration towards digitalisation.

“Especially under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS2030), data, whether big or small, is very important.

“And what does it mean to have smart data? It means everyone must be knowledgeable about data, and the entire ecosystem must be established to support it.”

On another note, the SwinTalk programme features a discussion on “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Enhancing Industry Competitiveness and Sustainability”, where industry leaders and experts explore the transformative role of AI in various sectors.

Attended by over 300 participants, including 100 corporate representatives from various industry backgrounds, the discussion also highlighted how AI is helping businesses enhance their competitiveness, improve operational efficiencies and contribute to sustainability efforts, all of which are critical to ensuring long-term success in a fast-evolving global economy.
