KUCHING:  Dr James Loi Chun Han, a prominent researcher and academician at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, has been appointed as a Fellow of the International Centre for UNESCO ASPnet (ICUA), further cementing his contributions to global education development and policy.

The UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) connects nearly 10,000 schools in over 180 countries, uniting them with a shared mission of fostering peace in the minds of children and youth.

The network promotes the core values of UNESCO including respect for human rights and dignity, gender equality, social progress, freedom, justice, democracy, diversity, and international solidarity.

At its core, ASPnet prioritises education for sustainable development, global citizenship education, and intercultural and heritage learning.

“We are proud of Dr Loi’s achievements and his continued dedication to driving global education dialogue,” stated a press statement by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.

“His appointment as a Fellow of the UNESCO ICUA is a testament to his commitment to advancing inclusive, equitable, and quality education aligned with international best practices,” it said.

The ICUA, based in Sanya, China, serves as a vital UNESCO hub.

The centre contributes to the global education agenda through knowledge production, technical support, and collaborative research, directly supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, as part of the Education 2030 framework.

This latest recognition follows Loi’s ongoing involvement with UNESCO.

In 2024, he was selected as one of only 30 international experts and the sole representative from Southeast Asia to attend the UNESCO International Policy Forum on Private Supplementary Tutoring at its Paris headquarters.

He is also among the 12 founding members of UNESCO’s Community of Practice (CoP) on Private Supplementary Tutoring, a body that advises policymakers and coordinates global education research initiatives.

“It is truly a humbling experience to be appointed as a UNESCO-ICUA Fellow.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to play my part in supporting UNESCO’s goal of making inclusive and equitable quality education for all a reality,” said Loi.
