KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science held its Semester 2 Final Year Project (FYP) Showcase recently.
Themed “People in STEM Can Work Together to Build a Better World”, the biannual showcase featured 134 projects presented by 290 final-year students across Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Robotics and Mechatronics, Electrical and Electronic, and Chemical), Computing (Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology), and Science (Biotechnology and Environmental Science).
Faculty dean Ir Professor Su Hieng Tiong said the successful completion of this year’s FYP Showcase reflects not only the creativity and technical strength of the students but also the growing synergy between academia and industry.
“Through close collaboration with our industry partners, we are preparing graduates who are not only job-ready but also innovation-ready, equipped to drive real-world impact.”
The event also featured a plenary session with guest speakers Daniel Kho, founder and chief technology officer of Logikhaus Sdn Bhd; and Abdul Najib Azhfar Aini, marketing and communications manager of SOCOE Sdn Bhd.
Kho shared insights on the value of engineering studies and potential career pathways, while Abdul Najib, alongside Swinburne alumni Gavin Ng and Jesse Ting, discussed transitioning from final-year projects to professional careers at SOCOE.
The Industry Award Ceremony recognised outstanding student projects, with industry representatives praising the innovation, practicality, and professional delivery of the projects.
Among the highly commended works were Samuel Haw Wei Aern’s “Hardware-Software Co-Design of a RISC-V Based Embedded Vision System for Face and Motion Detection” and the team project “A Centralised Event Management System” by Teo Jia En, Jayne Wong, Liu Yue Xin, Nicholas Yong, and Clement Chang.
Students also gained hands-on experience through career booths hosted by SOCOE, Logikhaus, and Perbena Emas, the latter introducing its PE NextGen Talent Programme.
Lin Poh Seng, representing the group that won the Best Achiever’s Award for ICT said their FYP journey, especially developing the CRM system, came with technical challenges and tight deadlines, but it strengthened our skills, teamwork, and confidence.
“Winning this award has further boosted our belief in what we can achieve together,” she said.
