KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) and Zhejiang Yuexiu University (ZYU) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance academic cooperation in education, research and commercialisation.

The signing ceremony was held at Zhejiang Yuexiu University’s Jinghu Campus in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China.

“This partnership solidifies an ongoing commitment to international collaboration and marks a significant milestone in fostering student exchanges, joint research projects, study tours, and the commercialization of academic and entrepreneurial ideas,”said Swinburne through a press statement today (Feb 28).

The collaboration aims to leverage the strengths of both institutions, particularly in business, digital commerce, technology and cross-border trade.

The signing ceremony took place during the visit of Swinburne Sarawak’s pro vice-chancellor and chief executive officer, Ir. Professor Lau Hieng Ho, to ZYU’s campus.

“This MoU represents our commitment to deeper academic, research  and industry integration. By leveraging each other’s strengths, we are injecting new momentum into high-quality educational cooperation between Southeast Asia and China,” said  Lau.

ZYU’s president, Professor Xiu Gang, welcomed the partnership, emphasising ZYU’s commitment to expanding its global network and strengthening collaboration with international institutions.

“Zhejiang Yuexiu University has always adhered to an open educational philosophy. This partnership with Swinburne Sarawak will empower regional talent cultivation and industrial innovation, providing broader development platforms for faculty and students,” said Xiu.

Zhejiang Yuexiu University (ZYU) is a full-time undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education in China.

Located in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, the university is recognised as one of the first batch of School-Enterprise Collaborative Employment Entrepreneurship Innovation Demonstration Practice Base units in China, reflecting its strong ties with industry and dedication to producing graduates with real-world expertise.

Under this MoU, Swinburne Sarawak and ZYU will collaborate in several strategic areas to enhance academic and industry engagement.

Both institutions will also develop co-teaching programmes, expand Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities and facilitate study tours to provide students with cross-cultural and industry exposure.

Even before the formalisation of this MoU, Swinburne Sarawak and ZYU have already achieved several successful initiatives together.

Following this agreement, both institutions are set to expand their collaboration even further, ensuring that students and faculty benefit from a dynamic, cross-cultural  and industry-driven academic environment.

This milestone partnership not only enhances the academic experience but also positions both universities as key players in shaping the future of digital commerce, cross-border business and higher education in the region.
