KUCHING: Swinburne Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science (FECS) celebrated innovation, collaboration and student excellence today (June 16) as 116 students displayed their final-year projects (FYP) during the Semester 1, 2025 Showcase.

Carrying the theme “People in STEM Can Work Together to Build a Better World,” the showcase featured 66 impressive projects, which serves not only as a culmination of academic achievements but also as a platform for industry engagement, recruitment and research collaboration.

The highlight of the day was the Industry Award ceremony, which recognised outstanding students’ projects across three categories.

The awards reaffirm the university’s strategic direction under the Horizon 2025 and Moonshots frameworks.

In his opening remarks at the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak), Dean of FECS Ir Professor Su Hieng Tiong, welcomed guests and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to industry-integrated learning and global employability.

“We are committed to challenging our students beyond the classroom, encouraging them to think critically, innovate boldly and deliver solutions that can have a tangible impact.

“We would also like to express our appreciation to the sponsors of the event — SOCOE Sdn Bhd, Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd and The James Dyson Foundation — whose support has brought added prestige to this event,” he said.

Organising Chair of Semester 1, 2025 FYP Showcase Chai Pui Ching said that the showcase was more than just an academic milestone.

“It enables students to present real-world solutions to real-world problems, while also opening doors to future employment, research and entrepreneurship,” she added.

To inspire students further, Marketing & Communications Manager at SOCOE Abdul Najib Azhfar Aini, delivered a plenary talk on giving back to society through technology and the importance of building meaningful career pathways.

In addition, the showcase also provided opportunities for students to connect with potential employers through an industry career booth by SOCOE and information sessions conducted by the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS), GIFT-Sarawak, and Job Sarawak.

Later in the day, a poster presentation session allowed one-on-one engagement between students and industry guests, fostering learning, confidence-building and reinforcing Swinburne’s reputation as a hub for top STEM talent.

Held twice a year, Swinburne Sarawak’s FYP Showcase is a signature event that highlights the practical impact of a Swinburne education, while strengthening ties between academia and industry.
