KUCHING: A six-month remedial project involving the construction of a new retaining wall and backfilling of eroded soil has officially commenced in Tabuan Heights here to address the aftermath of a landslide that occurred in November last year.

The project, spearheaded by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), aims to stabilise the slope behind four residential properties severely affected by the landslide incident on November 30, 2024.

It saw the collapse of a retention wall and damage to the backyards of the houses.

Political Secretary to the Premier, Kho Teck Wan, said the scope of the works includes the construction of a permanent retaining wall and the backfilling of soil washed away due to surface runoff, to prevent future slope failures.

She said the project officially kicked off following months of planning, budget securing, and engagement with affected homeowners and relevant government agencies.

“As this was not a planned state project, DID Sarawak had to work diligently to secure the necessary funding, which understandably took some time,” she said.

Kho added that temporary measures were earlier implemented, including the installation of geo bags as a short-term retention solution, while plans for a long-term fix were developed.

“Several meetings had taken place since the incident, involving stakeholders such as the DID, the Fire and Rescue Department, Kuching South City Council (MBKS), community leaders and the affected residents.

“The project was officially handed over to the contractor recently, with a site visit held last Sunday involving DID engineers, contractors, local councillors, and Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How,” she added.

During the visit, residents were briefed on the project timeline and scope of work.

Meanwhile, See also thanked the homeowners for their patience and cooperation over the past months.

He assured that he would personally monitor the project’s progress to ensure its timely completion.

Kho also expressed her appreciation to all parties involved, with special mention to DID Sarawak and See for their instrumental roles in ensuring the project moved forward.

“From the initial temporary measures to the final design and funding approval, this has been a collective effort.

“We thank everyone for their contributions in making this remedial work possible,” she said.
