MIRI: Rumah Panjang Melakus in Sungai Tiris, Sibuti, has taken a proactive step towards fire safety by establishing a Community Fire Brigade during a training programme on Sunday.

Located 42 kilometres from the Batu Niah Fire Station, the longhouse now has two teams, each comprising 10 members, equipped to respond to fire emergencies.

Meanwhile, the training programme, organised by the longhouse’s JKKK, focused on enhancing fire safety awareness among residents.

It focused on kitchen safety, especially under the ‘Celik Suri’ initiative, to empower women with the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to kitchen fires.

The programme included lectures on establishing Community Fire Brigades, fire safety guidelines, hands-on extinguisher training, joint inspections of fire extinguishers within the longhouse, and basic firefighting techniques for stove and gas cylinder-related incidents.

The head of the Batu Niah Fire Station, Rary Binjie, also lent his support and expertise to the programme.
