SIBU: Taman Selera Harmoni (TSH) at Jalan Awang Rambli Amit here has been officially recognised as the largest halal food hub in Sarawak’s central region, marking an important achievement in the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) efforts to endorse the halal food sector in the area.
The recognition was announced at a meeting of the SMC’s Market and Traders Standing Committee chaired by Cr Jenny Ting on Wednesday, with SMC Deputy Chairman, Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.
According to Izkandar, the official declaration of TSH as a halal food hub was made on March 14, 2022, but enforcement measures for halal certification have been tightened starting this year.
He said this was important to ensure that all stalls operating in the area complied with the halal standards set by the religious authorities.
“This is our long-term commitment in ensuring that halal integrity is maintained.
“It not only provides confidence to Muslim consumers, but also enhances Sibu’s reputation as a major halal food destination,” he said.
As a halal food hub, TSH plays an important role in attracting local and international tourists, as well as opening greater economic opportunities for small traders.
At the same meeting, the Committee also emphasised the importance of better facilities in SMC markets.
Among the proposed measures include upgrading the public toilet in the market to meet the BMW (clean, attractive, fragrance) standards as prescribed by the Federal Housing and Local Government Ministry.
This effort is seen as part of the SMC initiative in modernising market infrastructure, improving hygiene levels and creating a more comfortable and safe environment for traders and visitors.
“Our focus is not only on physical development, but also to a comprehensive user experience.
“We want the markets under the SMC to be a great example in terms of management, hygiene and convenience.
“SMC is committed to continuing to support the small traders community while ensuring that public health and safety are always a priority,” Izkandar added.
