KOTA SAMARAHAN: The pre-launch ceremony of Taman Tasik Desa Ilmu marks a significant milestone in the effort to transform Kota Samarahan into a vibrant and livable satellite city.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the project is the result of strategic planning by the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA), and is being implemented by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).

According to him, the rapid development of this area as an educational hub – home to institutions such as the Tun Abdul Razak Teacher Education Institute (IPGKTAR), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) – has created an urgent need for recreational spaces to support community wellbeing.

“This area holds great potential as a community recreational spot, and even though the park is not yet fully completed, it has already become a popular spot for locals,” he said during the ceremony held recently.

The RM6.8-million project has reached 22.43 per cent completion since construction began in November 2024, and it is expected to be fully completed by November 2025.

Built on a 9.38-hectare site, the park will feature various amenities including parking lots, public restrooms, jogging tracks, and a small bridge that is expected to become a main attraction for visitors.

He added that the park’s design is inspired by the perahu tambang (traditional boat), an iconic symbol closely associated with Kota Samarahan.

This element is reflected in the main structures of the park, such as the roof and columns, which highlight the paddling motion, embodying the culture of Sarawak’s riverboat operators.

“This design not only emphasises the local identity but also celebrates the history and culture of the local community,” he said.

In addition, IRSDA is also planning the development of Boulevard Samarahan, a landmark post-pandemic project set to become a major venue for large-scale events, replacing Padang Sentral.

Spanning two kilometres in length and over 20 metres in width, the boulevard is expected to be the largest in Sarawak, fully equipped with recreational facilities and designed to attract both tourists and locals.

“We want to foster a conducive lifestyle, not just residential areas that go quiet after working hours, and these projects will enliven Samarahan and strengthen family and community bonds,” Abdul Karim added.
