KUCHING: Sarawak Amateur Gymnastics Association (SAGYMA) is aiming even higher after its athletes surpassed expectations at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026.
Surpassing its medal target with a haul of one gold, two silver and two bronze medals has given Sarawak gymnastics renewed confidence heading into the next SUKMA
SAGYMA president Johnny Tan Seng Hock said the result reflected the dedication shown by the athletes and coaching staff throughout their preparations.
“Success never comes easily, and every medal represents countless hours of training and dedication,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Tan credited the achievement to the collective effort of the gymnasts, coaches and support personnel, while also thanking the Sarawak Government, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) for their continued backing of the sport.
Rather than viewing the campaign as a finishing point, he said the association was already looking ahead to SUKMA 2028 in Kelantan.
“We will continue working hard to build on this performance and strive for even greater success at the next SUKMA,” he said.
Tan also hopes the organisers will include Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) in the programme for the next Games, saying its inclusion would provide more opportunities for Sarawak’s female gymnasts to compete.
The encouraging campaign has further strengthened the association’s belief that Sarawak gymnastics can continue progressing on the national stage.
“The journey continues. Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban,” he said.
