KUCHING: Malaysia’s top mixed doubles duo, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, produced a gritty comeback to reach the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open 2025 with a 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 victory over Denmark’s fifth seeds, Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund – a pair they were facing for the very first time.
The quarter-final clash at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, today lasted 54 minutes, with the Malaysians bouncing back after conceding the first game.
Their sharp net play and composure under pressure proved decisive as they gradually took control in the latter stages.
It was a strong statement from Tang Jie and Ee Wei, who are finding renewed rhythm since reuniting officially at the Singapore Open last month.
“We came prepared. My partner played well today. We’ve learnt from our short break to be more patient and responsible,” said Tang Jie in a post-match audio recording shared by Badminton World Federation (BWF).
The duo will now face Thailand’s sixth seeds, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, in the semis for a place in the final.
The Thais earlier ended the run of another Malaysian pair, Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, in straight games, 21-16, 21-12.
Soon Huat and Shevon rued their inconsistency, admitting they struggled to match the Thai pair’s attacking tempo and made too many unforced errors in their sets.
The Indonesia Open – a Super 1000 event on the BWF World Tour – continues at Istora Gelora Bung Karno until 8 June, offering a total prize pool of USD1.45 million (about RM6.13 million).
