SIBU: Three rivers in the Dudong constituency are now attracting fish, especially tapah fish, after cleaning works were carried out recently.
Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong’s Chairman, Datuk Teo Boon Siew, said that the rivers in question, namely Sungai Durin, Sungai Naman and Sungai Assan, had not been cleaned for a long time.
“As a result of the cleaning works, tapah fish have returned to the rivers to spawn. This situation is certainly beneficial to the residents,” he said when met by reporters today.
In this regard, he called on residents in the area to continue keeping the rivers clean for the sake of the sustainability of the river habitat.
“I have also received complaints about the condition of the rivers in the area which is said to smell.
“Tomorrow I will go to Sungai Naman to personally inspect the situation and identify the cause of the smell,” he explained.
Earlier, Teo officiated at the handover ceremony of allocations from Dudong Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, to 17 recipients.
The recipients consist of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that include the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), longhouses, churches, associations and clubs.
He also advised the recipients to use the allocation correctly according to the original purpose of their application.
“For example, if the application is to repair a house, use this allocation to repair the house; if the application is to carry out an annual activity, use it for that purpose.
“This is important because if there is misuse, it can make it difficult to approve allocation applications in the future,” he stressed.
Also present was a political secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Joshua Ting Fu Ying.
