PETALING JAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook says Malaysia is ramping up diplomatic efforts to ease the impact of a potential 25 per cent US tariff, set to take effect August 1, on its maritime sector.
Loke said the maritime industry remains strong, with rising trade volumes at ports operated by MMC Corp Bhd and Westports Holdings Bhd.
“We are doing well. Port volumes have increased, and Port Klang is expected to be named among the world’s top 10 busiest by Lloyd’s List next month,” he said at the launch of Malaysia Maritime Week (MMW25) on Tuesday.
Loke noted that Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) are driving Malaysia’s maritime growth, with PTP seeing monthly volume gains of nearly 10 per cent.
About 96.4 per cent of Malaysia’s trade moves by sea.
In 2024, the country recorded its highest-ever trade volume of RM2.879 trillion. – BERNAMA
