SIBU: Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai, emphasised that in order for Sarawak to produce a competitive and quality young generation, education must be parallel with the change of time.
He pointed out that the role of teachers today is no longer limited to delivering knowledge solely in the classroom, but also includes the responsibility of shaping students’ character so they can face the increasing challenges in the world due to technological advancements, changing job landscapes, and unpredictable global issues.
“Education is undergoing rapid transformation. Therefore, teachers need to continue to empower themselves with new skills and knowledge so that they can provide education that is not only of quality, but also relevant to current needs,” he said.
He echoed this during the Excellent Service, Jasamu Dikenang and Appreciation Ceremony organised by the Selangau District Education Office (PPD) at a prominent hotel here today.
The event, themed ‘Menjulang Budi, Mengukir Gemilang’, was held to appreciate the services and dedication of educators in the Selangau district.
Sikie, who is also the Kakus Assemblyman, stressed that every child must be given the opportunity to enjoy quality education from a young age, as it would be the foundation for their future success.
“Teachers’ influence is not only limited to academic aspects, but also encompasses the formation of students’ values, morals and identity, which are the foundation of building a nation,” he said.
He also noted that teachers are often a source of strength, guidance and the last hope for students who face various challenges in life.
“Teachers not only shape individual success, but also shape the future of the country,” he remarked.
During the event, he announced an allocation of RM10,000 to the Selangau District Education Office Welfare Club for the welfare of educators in the district.
At the event, three categories of awards were presented: the Excellent Service Award (APC) to 44 teachers and officers for their outstanding performance; the Jasamu Dikenang Award for 11 retirees in appreciation for their dedicated service; and the Appreciation Award to 84 teachers and schools for their contributions to the development of Selangau district education.
