KUCHING: Team Dynamic Kuching has distributed 100 free vegetarian meals at the South Asia (Ong Kee) Trading Company shoplot in Padungan, here this morning (Sept 22).
Another 30 packs were delivered to residents of the nearby KMC Flats, many of whom are elderly or living with disabilities.
The initiative, held on the first and 15th day of every Lunar Month since 2023, is organised by Team Dynamic Kuching in collaboration with Team Share Love Together, and supported by the Jalan Mathies, Padungan Utara and Bukit Mata Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK).
“This programme is very close to our hearts. We want to show the community that someone cares for them. It is a small way to connect and share with the people around us,” said Team Dynamic Kuching chairman Eric Tay in a statement today.
He explained that the initiative was also tied to Buddhist practice.
“For Buddhists, the first and 15th day of the Lunar Month are days when many take vegetarian meals. By distributing food on these days, we not only respect tradition but also create a space for the community to come together,” he said.
The food distribution programme was first carried out in 2023 at Kien Hin Company, opposite Everrise Padungan, before moving to its current location to better serve the local community and avoid disrupting nearby coffee shop businesses.
Over time, it has become a familiar event for residents who know they can receive meals on the scheduled days regardless of the weather.
Looking ahead, Tay said the team plans to add something special to the next distribution.
“This coming October 6, the 15th day of the Lunar Month, we are excited to give out mooncakes along with the vegetarian meals. It’s our way of celebrating together and spreading joy to everyone in the community.”
The programme has continued to grow steadily with strong support from volunteers, sponsors, and the local JKKK.
