KUCHING: The proposed Tebedu Economic and Cultural Complex is set to become a catalyst for sustainable growth, innovation, and stronger social cohesion in the Serian Division.
The landmark project, financed by the Sarawak Government through the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), will cost RM46 million and is poised to transform Serian into a vibrant economic hub.
GKCDA special administrative officer Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik described the project as the largest economic centre to be developed in the division, strategically located near the new Serian District Office.
He said 15 acres of land had been identified and approved for the construction of the proposed complex, which is expected to comprise a main entrance arch, main office and exhibition centre, studios and workshops, lock-up shops, a food court, public toilets, a market, a public gathering plaza, an amphitheatre, a transit hub for trucks, coaches and buses, as well as recreational areas.
“This proposed complex, which was identified by Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada, will not only stimulate economic activities but also serve as a platform to promote cultural heritage and strengthen unity among our multi-racial communities,” he said.
According to him, by combining economic and cultural components under one roof, the development aims to create a dynamic environment that supports entrepreneurship while preserving local traditions.
Ik Pahon stressed that the project would generate new business and employment opportunities for local communities, particularly youths and small traders seeking to expand their ventures.
“With better infrastructure and organised facilities, local entrepreneurs can innovate, improve their products and services, and compete more effectively. This will have a multiplier effect on the local economy,” he added.
He also noted that the complex aligns with the Sarawak Government’s broader vision of balanced regional development, ensuring that rural and border areas such as Tebedu are not left behind.
Developing an economic and cultural complex is crucial, as it merges cultural heritage with economic activity to drive sustainable growth, foster innovation, and strengthen social cohesion.
By leveraging local identity for tourism and creative industries, it creates jobs, increases asset value, and promotes a more resilient, inclusive, and regionally balanced economy.
Once completed, the Tebedu Economic and Cultural Complex is expected to enhance Serian’s economic landscape, promote cross-border trade activities, and serve as a symbol of progress and unity for the people of the division.
