SARATOK: The latest technology can be adapted to attract the interest of the digital generation in the traditional game of gasing or tops.
Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said that despite the tide of modernisation and the explosion of digital technology, traditional games such as gasing should not be forgotten, especially by the younger generation.
According to him, this cultural heritage, once the heartbeat of village communities, now faces challenges to remain relevant.
“Gasing games are not just a form of entertainment but also hold historical value and require a high level of craftsmanship.
“However, without conservation efforts and adaptation to modern trends, they risk fading from the collective memory of the people.
“In this regard, the use of technology could be an effective method of sparking the digital generation’s interest in this traditional sport,” he said.
He made the remarks after officiating and presenting prizes at the Open Category Pangkah Gasing Competition held in conjunction with the 2025 Saratok Festival here on Thursday.
He suggested the creation of gasing-themed mobile applications, short documentaries on platforms such as TikTok or YouTube, and even augmented reality (AR) experiences.
This, he stressed, would allow users to play gasing virtually, offering a creative and high-impact alternative to preserve the game.
At the community level, Mohamad added, competitions organised by the Kenyalang Gasing Sports Club can revive the spirit of togetherness and serve as a tourism attraction.
For this year’s edition held during the Saratok Festival, Team Rebak from Debak emerged as champions after defeating Team Libas Bugau from Spaoh in the final.
Team Rebak took home a prize of RM1,000 along with a medal and a hamper, while Libas Bugau received RM700.
Team GSU 2 and Team Pak Aji, both from Saratok, were placed third and fourth respectively, earning prizes of RM500 and RM300.
A total of 32 teams took part in the competition, including five from Debak, four from Sri Aman, four from Spaoh, and 19 from Saratok.
