SIBU: A teenage boy was arrested for reckless and dangerous riding during an integrated operation codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ last Saturday (Oct 18).
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the 16-year-old was spotted performing a wheelie — a dangerous stunt involving lifting the motorcycle’s front wheel off the ground — endangering himself and other road users.
“As a result, the boy was detained under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding on a public road.
“If convicted, the offence provides for up to five years imprisonment, a fine up to RM15,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least two years,” he said.
The operation, aimed to curb illegal street activities and ensure compliance with traffic laws, was carried out between 9pm and midnight around Jalan Bujang Suntong and Jalan Awang Ramli Amit.
During the operation, a total of 43 vehicles were inspected and it resulted in the confiscation of 28 modified motorcycles under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further inspection.
Zulkipli added that police also issued a total of 128 summonses for various traffic offences, including modified exhausts, driving without a licence, vehicle modifications, missing number plates, and other traffic violations.
“Such operations will continue from time to time, especially targeting motorcyclists, to prevent illegal street activities,” he said.
Members of the public are advised to always drive or ride responsibly, avoid involvement in illegal street activities, and refrain from modifying vehicles which may disturb public peace.
