KUCHING: A 15-year-old boy has pleaded guilty today to two charges in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the lives of five individuals early this year.
The teenager entered his plea before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan after both charges were read out in court.
For the first count, he was charged under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, punishable under the same section, for causing the deaths of five individuals aged between 16 and 42 by reckless driving.
The second charge, under Section 39 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, punishable under Section 39(5) of the same Act, involved driving a Proton Saga while being under the legal age of 16.
Both offences were committed along Jalan Teo Kui Seng-Stutong Baru at around 1:10 pm on January 14.
The court has allowed the teenager bail set at RM5,000 with his parents as sureties.
In addition, the court also fixed June 17 for the case to be mentioned again pending the teenager’s moral report.
Meanwhile, in a separate Magistrate’s Court, the teenager’s father, Akie Suma, 36, was fined RM15,000 in default 12 months in prison for failing to provide the teenager with adequate supervision and care.
He pleaded guilty before Senior Assistant Registrar Nuraini Ahmad to the charge under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mohamad Fillany Siji, also requested that Akie complete 100 hours of community service within six months.
Both father and son were unrepresented by counsel.
The horrific crash, which occurred on January 14, involved three cars and two motorcycles.
Four victims (three male and a local woman) aged between 16 and 45, were pronounced dead at the scene, while another 16-year-old boy died while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) later the same day.
Police investigations found that the accident was caused by a car travelling from Jalan Airport towards Jalan Setia Raja, which had swerved out of control, overturned and collided into two motorcycles and two cars in the opposite lane.
