Teen placed on good behaviour bond for theft

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here ordered a teenage girl to be placed on a one-year good behaviour bond for stealing an Apple tablet from an optical shop earlier this year.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan meted out the sentence after reviewing a social report from the Welfare Department, in accordance with Section 91(1)(b) of the Child Act 2001.

The 17-year-old was accused of committing the offence at an optical shop along Jalan Rubber Barat around 1.30pm on Feb 8.

She was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment for a term of up to 10 years and a fine, upon conviction.

According to the case facts, the shop employee discovered the store’s tablet, which had been placed on a table, was missing.

Checks on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage revealed a female customer taking the tablet and placing it into her sling bag before walking out of the shop.

A police report was filed and it led to the teen’s arrest on Feb 10.

Investigations confirmed that the teenager had stolen the tablet belonging to the optical shop.
