SIBU: A 17-year-old boy spent his Valentine’s Day in a police lockup after being caught riding recklessly during an integrated traffic operation codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan.’

The operation, conducted by traffic police here along Jalan Awang Ramli Amit and Sibu Jaya, was held from 5.30 pm to 1.30 am on Friday (Feb 14).

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed the teenager’s arrest for reckless and dangerous riding, an offense under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in jail, a fine of up to RM15,000, and a five-year suspension of his driving license.

Throughout the operation, the team also issued 24 traffic summonses for various offenses, including failing to possess a driving license, expired road tax, modified vehicle structure and exhaust, fancy license plates, lack of side mirrors, and incomplete vehicle accessories.

He added that a total of seven motorcycles were seized for documentation purposes and 15 motorists were inspected.

In light of this, Zulkipli advised road users to adhere to traffic laws and urged parents to monitor and be aware of their children’s activities to prevent them from getting involved in illegal activities.
