KUCHING: The search and rescue (SAR) operation at Kampung Kolong Sungai Tengah ended in tragedy when the body of a missing teenager was discovered this morning.

On the third day of the operation, the remains of 16-year-old Fahrell Zaquan Hasbullah were found by members of the public at about 11.20 am, approximately 2.7 kilometres from the command post.

“The victim was transported by boat to Masjid Kampung Tengah Sungai after his identity was confirmed.

“His family verified that the remains were Fahrell before the body was handed over to the police for further action,” said the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

The operation was officially called off at 2 pm.

According to reports, the teenager had been playing with friends along the riverbank when he fell into the river and was swept away by strong currents. He was reported missing at about 4.32 pm on Friday.

He was described as shirtless and wearing long white pants at the time of the incident.

Firefighters from the Petra Jaya fire station, together with other emergency responders, began SAR operations shortly after receiving the report.
