KUCHING: A teenage boy has been placed on a one-year good behaviour bond with a bail of RM300 and one surety by the Magistrate’s Court today (Feb 5) for purchasing an illegal lottery ticket at a café in Matang last December.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Wan Alwi issued the order after hearing a character report from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

The 17-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 for participating in an unauthorised public lottery at a café in Matang at approximately 1.46 pm on December 24, 2024.

If convicted, the offence carries a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.

According to case facts, a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Padawan District Police Headquarters conducted a raid at the café as part of “Ops Dadu.”

During the operation, officers detained a man sitting at a table outside the café for inspection. A check of the suspect’s mobile phone revealed elements of illegal lottery activity.

The seized items were sent for examination by a gambling expert, who confirmed the presence of unauthorised lottery transactions.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor ASP Arman Ibrahim, while the accused was unrepresented.
