Sarawak’s critically acclaimed film, Tegkang, is set to achieve another milestone as it officially premieres on Netflix worldwide on February 28.

This marks a significant achievement for Sarawak’s film industry, positioning Tegkang among the select few local productions that have successfully reached an international audience through the world’s leading streaming platform.

Produced by MyContent Distribution, Tegkang unfolds against the breathtaking highlands of Bario, Sarawak, weaving a heartfelt narrative of independence, curiosity, secrets, family, love, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Offering an authentic insight into the unique culture of the Kelabit community, Tegkang seamlessly blends universal themes with Sarawak’s rich traditions.

The film has gained international recognition, winning the Best First-Time Filmmaker Award at the Lift-Off Sessions, an annual competition with its awards ceremony held at Pinewood Studios, London.

Its cinema screenings received glowing reviews, with audiences praising its compelling storyline, deep cultural portrayal, and stunning cinematography that captures the beauty of Sarawak.

With support from the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) and the Ministry of Communications and Digital under the Digital Content Fund (DKD), alongside backing from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak, Tegkang stands as a testament to Malaysia’s growing presence in the global film landscape.

Executive producer Lyn Nasihin expressed her excitement about the global premiere, stating: “This is a proud moment not just for the Tegkang team but also for Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.

“Our goal has always been to tell authentic and emotionally resonant stories while showcasing the breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage of Sarawak.

“Bringing Tegkang to a global audience on Netflix is a natural step forward in sharing our stories with the world.

“We hope this milestone inspires more narratives from our region to reach international audiences.”

FINAS chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib also commended the film’s success.

“We are immensely proud to see Tegkang making a name for itself internationally. This achievement highlights the quality and potential of Malaysian storytelling, particularly stories from Borneo, which hold immense appeal in the global market.

“At FINAS, we are honoured to have supported this film through DKD and remain committed to nurturing and elevating the local creative industry.

“Tegkang has proven that stories from Borneo have tremendous potential, and we are proud to see it shine on the world stage,” he said.

Beyond its cinematic journey, the film has also brought global attention to Malaysia’s film industry, further establishing Sarawak as an emerging filming destination, with its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes.

As Tegkang prepares for its global Netflix debut, it not only showcases Sarawak’s breathtaking landscapes but also amplifies the rich heritage of the Kelabit language and culture.

Premiering just days after International Mother Language Day, the film stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous voices and stories — bringing them from the heart of Borneo to the world.
