EVEN when he’s away from the hectic schedules of official duties and constituency matters, Telang Usan assemblyman, Datuk Dennis Ngau, find cooking as a simple way to relax and recharge.
He enjoys cooking simple Orang Olu dishes like rebus fish and pucuk midin, and spends quiet moments reading self-improvement books by successful people, scientists, and social writers – a habit that helps him reflect and plan ahead.
Sarawak Tribune: What makes you proud in your constituency?

Dennis: Since 2011, with the support of the state and federal governments, we have achieved meaningful development. Nearly all 88 longhouses in Telang Usan now enjoy 24-hour electricity through the Solar Saris programme. Bridges, roads, basic amenities, and telecommunication coverage have also improved. Visiting the villages, I feel proud knowing tangible progress has reached the people.
Sarawak Tribune: If you could make one simple change to improve life in your constituency, what would it be?
Dennis: Improving road connectivity. Over 1,000 kilometres of dirt roads built by logging companies are now deteriorating as logging activities decrease. Many areas are so remote that even the Public Works Department (JKR) struggles to maintain them. Better infrastructure would make life easier for residents.
Sarawak Tribune: Can you share a memorable or unexpected experience as an elected representative?
Dennis: You must have ‘lapang dada’. Most calls I receive are urgent – deaths, sick children, power outages, or road collapses. My policy is to keep my phone open for constituents, even in the early hours. It’s all part of serving the people.
Sarawak Tribune: What advice do you have for young people in your constituency?
Dennis: Study hard. Education is the key to progress. If you want opportunities beyond the village, you must move forward and pursue learning. Many youths from Telang Usan have graduated and are now working in different fields, which is a source of pride for us.
Sarawak Tribune: Any favourite books or authors?
Dennis: I focus on books written by successful people or social scientists – anything that helps me improve myself and apply lessons in serving my constituency.
