MUKAH: A total of 20 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) projects are set to be implemented in the Tellian constituency in 2026.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine highlighted the need to strengthen the standard operating procedure (SOP) for RTP project implementation, particularly in addressing issues with problematic contractors.

Speaking at the RTP 2026 Proposed Project Mini Lab for Mukah District on Wed (Mar 12), he stressed that stricter measures must be taken to ensure projects are completed according to the required standards, quality, and timeframe.

He expressed concern over unethical contractors who prioritise profit over project quality, leading to abandoned or substandard developments that ultimately disadvantage both the public and the government.

“When contractors secure a project tender, they must take full responsibility for its successful completion. However, investigations have revealed that some contractors involved in problematic projects operate under different company names while being owned by the same individuals,” he said.

He further said that they would push for responsible agencies to refine the SOP for RTP project implementation to prevent such issues from recurring.

Royston also highlighted that these problematic contractors are obstructing the Sarawak government’s efforts to drive development in certain areas.

He added that implementing agencies must conduct stricter monitoring to prevent project abandonment or failure to meet quality standards.

“The contractor selection process must be more stringent, especially for those identified as repeat offenders,” he stressed.
