SERIAN: A total of seven temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in the Serian Division are being upgraded as a proactive measure in preparation for any potential natural disasters in the future, especially during the Northeast Monsoon (MTL).
Minister of Education, Innovation and Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said the upgrading of these PPS is part of the state government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure preparedness and strengthen community support systems when facing disaster situations.
Sagah added that a total of 55 disaster-related project proposals have been submitted to the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), with an estimated total cost of RM31.7 million.
“The proposed projects include repair works in areas affected by disasters such as floods, landslides, erosion and fallen trees.
“This move is seen as a comprehensive effort to reinforce disaster response capabilities and minimise the risk of future damage.
“This disaster was especially challenging as it occurred during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
“However, swift action and cooperation from all agencies and the local community ensured the safety and welfare of the people,” he said during an Appreciation Ceremony for MTL 2025 Responders held recently.
Sagah also acknowledged the efforts of Serian Division Resident, Caroline Cleophas Joseph, who serves as the Chairperson of the Divisional Disaster Management Committee, along with district officers, community leaders, and donors who provided various forms of assistance throughout the MTL 2025 disaster, which affected more than 2,500 residents here.
“This aid and contribution not only saved lives but also became a symbol of humanity and solidarity among the people of Sarawak,” he added.
Meanwhile, a total of RM780,000 in Compassionate Cash Assistance (BWI) has been approved by JPBN Sarawak to be distributed to 780 heads of households who were relocated to the PPS between January 28 and February 6, 2025.
