SIBU: Youth here are encouraged to recognise their own potential and step forward to nominate themselves — or other deserving individuals — for the Junior Chamber International (JCI) 2025 Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Award.
Taking the town as an example, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said that Sibu is home to many talented, hardworking, and passionate young individuals who are making strides in fields such as entrepreneurship, volunteerism, and technology.
“TOYM is more than just a celebration of personal achievement; it is a platform to honour those who have made meaningful contributions to society,” he said during a press conference for TOYM 2025 at the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) building, here yesterday (May 5).
He emphasised that successful young people can serve as role models, inspiring others and motivating the younger generation to strive for excellence.
Chieng added that the recognition provided by TOYM goes beyond individual accolades — it reflects the impact that young people are making in their communities and the nation at large.
“I’m especially proud of my friend Jagung, a mural artist and a prime example of outstanding youth here in Sibu. I hope he will consider nominating himself,” he said.
Believing that youth are the heartbeat of Sibu’s progress and drivers of future development, Chieng urged greater participation from young people to spark positive change and contribute to the town’s growth.
“I also encourage families, friends, and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) to support this initiative by nominating individuals they believe have the potential to make a difference,” he added.
He noted that TOYM, which follows an internationally recognised nomination process, offers young people here the chance to build global networks and exchange ideas with top young achievers from around the world.
“We must not confine ourselves to Sibu — we need to be bold and take that leap to the national and international stage,” he said.
Meanwhile, TOYM 2025 organising chairperson Candy Yong revealed that since nominations opened in March, they have received 50 submissions — only one of which is from Sarawak.
“We aim to receive around 200 nominations nationwide and hope to see at least 100 coming from Sarawak alone,” she said.
Yong also mentioned that Sarawak has once again been selected to host the JCI TOYM, which will take place in Miri.
The TOYM Award is a prestigious annual recognition for Malaysian youth aged between 18 and 40 who have demonstrated excellence and leadership across various fields.
