KUCHING: Ten employment agencies from Sarawak have obtained licences to recruit workers as authorised agencies.

Deputy Director of Labour Department of Sarawak (JTK) Sulaiman Ismail said they are among the authorised and trusted agencies that Sarawakians should turn to for jobs that are being offered either in Sarawak or outside the state, including those overseas.

“We don’t want history like in the case of the Sarawakians detained in Cambodia to repeat itself, and there are some agencies whose licences have expired but are still not coming to see us (Labour Department) to get them renewed,” he said.

Sulaiman also stressed that social media users should always take precautions before accepting any highly paid jobs that are being offered to them, adding that they should always check with the department  the legality of the company.

“As we have monitored in social media such as Facebook, they are a lot of people advertising job vacancies to recruit people.

“They must be logical; if it is a simple job with a high pay, then there is something fishy about the job and one must think carefully before accepting it,” he said.

Sulaiman also added that the print media should be aware of people coming to approach them to advertise vacancies in newspapers as the persons might be potential scammers.

“Presently there are eight registered agencies in Sarawak which have received their Licence C (recruiting domestic and foreign job seekers, and non-citizen employees in the country) and are permitted to recruit workers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sulaiman said there are two registered agencies with Licence B (recruiting local job seekers abroad, and foreign domestic servants in the country) under the Private Employment Agency Act 1981.
