KUCHING: The Sarawak Esports Expo (SAREX) will return for its fourth edition this year with a strong focus on strengthening the esports development ecosystem, say organisers.
Sarawak Esports Association (SESA) president Afiq Fadhli Narawi said this year’s expo will prioritise discussions and knowledge-sharing on career pathways in esports, including coach certification programmes, marshal licensing and other related professional certifications.
He said the expo will also emphasise opportunities in game publishing and development.
“We will be bringing in several studios to be directly involved, while working closely with (Chinese multinational technology conglomerate) Tencent this year.
“Tencent is expected to be a key strategic partner for SAREX and future editions.”
Afiq was speaking to reporters after a Sarawak Esports engagement session with Tencent at Metadise Academy here on Wednesday (Feb 4).
While dates for the expo have yet to be finalised, he said SAREX 2026 is expected to attract around 1,500 participants from Malaysia and abroad, including Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Participants will compete and attend workshops and forums aimed at industry development, he added.
“We are also planning to organise several pre-Sukma (Malaysia Games) competitions during SAREX, with the involvement of international teams from Southeast Asia.
“This approach is expected to create a greater impact, not only in terms of competition, but also in the overall value of the event.”
Afiq added that SESA hopes to highlight the broader value of esports, including its potential benefits to the community, its contribution to the local economy and its positive impact on overall economic growth.
